Book Review – Tireless by Kim Lorenz

Overview

Tireless by Kim Lorenz is an insider scoop on what it’s like to start your own business. Focused on the tire industry, Kim goes in-depth about the importance of communication, building strong networks from the beginning onward, understanding the pros and cons of partnerships and contracts, and many other “tireless” efforts of running and building a corporation (and that pun is made a lot in this book).

Tireless was a bit slow paced but very informative about what goes on behind the scenes. I did enjoy the shorter personal stories that emphasized the primary lesson of each chapter. Some stories seemed to run on a bit, but overall each shared the missteps that can easily happen to any business venture, big or small.

This is not a stereotypical statistics-focused business book. If you enjoy behind-the-scenes documentaries, then this would be the book for readers interested in starting their own business.

Hidden Opportunities

“Opportunity can come in thousands of different ways, but if you are not looking for it, it will be missed. Opportunity can be disguised as an obstacle, but when you face it head-on, in most cases, you will discover new paths to success. But, again, this is only true if you are looking for it.”

I am guilty of stressing and dwelling over any type of setback. It’s easy to become obsessed with our set plans and overlook the opportunities that are mistaken as just inconveniences. One example for me was getting fired from my Technical Support position for putting in a two-week notice (read the full story about this experience in our LinkedIn article). There was a heavy sense of betrayal, and I realized at that point that I did not want to be solely dependent on an employer anymore. I still work, but that experience triggered me to explore secondary income options which fueled the motivation to finally invest in starting this blog.

Take these “unfortunate outcomes” as stepping stones and acknowledge the ways you can turn them into opportunities.

It’s your choice on where to be in life

“If you enjoy your work and where you are in life, you are in an enviable position. If you have a desire to do something bigger, make a difference, and be more successful, you have a choice to make. It is up to you whether you want to take action or be content where you are. How you look at everything can make a significant difference in the remainder of your life.”

Are you happy with where you are now in life? This could be with career, family, finances, education, travel, etc. Everyone’s definition of “happiness” will be different from one another’s. It can also change over the years. As a teen, I really wanted to live near the beach. After living in three different locations where the beach was less than an hour’s drive away (which I rarely took advantage of once I realized how hard it is to get sand out of my car), I now want to live somewhere with more affordable rent and cheaper car insurance. Can I get a #AdultLife?

I also want to grow the blog to where if something happens to my day job, I don’t have to go through another financial panic like the one from the Technical Support position. Your goals might be significantly different from mine, and that’s okay. What’s important is that you identify these goals that you want in life and put in the efforts to work towards them. If you sit around just wishing for it, it’ll never come to be.

Get that hands-on experience

“Street smarts come from life experience. That is why you won’t be able to learn everything you need to know about running a successful business – or be successful at anything you do, for that matter – by only reading a book, watching a video, or searching the internet. “

I cannot stress enough how important it is to just start earning that hands-on experience as soon as possible. Books are great and all, but actually doing what you’re striving for is how you truly learn, mistakes and all. I’ve made a plethora of mistakes with blogging, affiliate marketing, cooking, money management, new jobs, and just about every other freakin’ thing I’ve started from scratch, and that’s alright. Being able to analyze and process why my mistakes ended up that way forced me to acknowledge more effective (and less stressful) ways to do things. Remember, books and tutorials are only helpful if you understand what the heck they’re talking about.

Choose now or forever hold your peace

“Every day, no matter your vocation, you have a choice of how you spend your day. It is easy to find fault, complain, make excuses and accomplish very little. Or, you can choose to think outside the box, be creative, and find new ways to do what others do not think can be done. Study how your subconscious really works. Make your self-talk positive. It is amazing how much better you will feel. And, when you follow through on your plans, you will join the elite few who become known as the go-to people in your vocation.”

Here’s a little game for you. Next time you participate in a group conversation, listen carefully to people’s complaints and desires:

• Do they claim that they want to learn a new skill. Do they then complain about not having time to do it after they just raved about another Netflix series that they spent two weeks binge-watching?
• How about desiring to save up for a trip then complaining that it’s impossible to save in this economy after they’ve just returned from their third shopping spree of the week?
• Or, and this one is probably my favorite, wishing that they could be doing what someone else is doing. Another individual then takes the time to explain in explicit detail what all needs to be done to achieve that. Then, the wishful individual brushes the instructions off as nonsense and declares that the successful individual “is just extremely lucky”.

Ugggggghhhh!

Whatever it is in life that you desire, you have to be the one to put in the long, tedious, and TIRELESS work to make it happen! Life is going to throw whatever challenges it can at you! If your passion for your goals are strong enough, then get back up, dust yourself off, and keep going! Complaints with no efforts to create a change will get no one nowhere.
